Definition
– Ayur = life and veda = science or knowledge – Originated in India >3,000 years ago
– Key concepts: universal interconnectedness (among people, their health, and the universe), body’s constitution and life forces
– No states allow licensure for Ayurvedic practitioners
– Not well enough studied to be able to support beneficial claims
• 2008 NCCIH funded study found 40 of 193 Ayurvedic produced purchased online (manufactured in the US or India) had lead, mercury, and/or arsenic that exceeded acceptable daily intake per US recommendations

Definition
– Used for thousands of years
– Combination of herbal medicines and mind and body practices
– Mixed research of effectiveness, many practices (ti chi, acupuncture) are relatively low risk
– In 2004, the FDA banned ephedra-containing dietary supplements due to proven link to MIs and strokes
– FDA regulates acupuncture needles as medical devicessterile, nontoxic, labeled for single-use

– Arizona, Connecticut and Nevada license homeopathic medical doctors
