Cardinal Scipione Borghese
Definition

Cardinal Scipione Borghese--nephew of Pope Paul V (ruled 1605-1621) had a palace in "downtown" Rome, where he spent most of his time, but in 1608, he began to acquire land (mostly vineyards) outside the Pincian gate (Porta Pinciana) to the north of the ancient Roman walls, where he planned to build his villa. The principal casino was begun by Flaminio Ponzio and completed at Ponzio's death (1613) by the Flemish architect Jan van Zanten. In general plan--a main block with two projecting wings, forming a block-like "U" shape--it follows the Renaissance prototype of the Villa Farnesina. The exterior was richly decorated with ancient statues and reliefs, while the interior--which housed Cardinal Borghese's ever-growing art collection, including a number of sculptures and paintings by Bernini--contained a room whose ceiling was decorated (in emulation of the Farnese Gallery) with frescoes by Lanfranco. The grounds of the villa continued to grow as Scipione accumulated more and more land around the original tract.
