Term

LARYNX

Boundaries

Definition

The larynx is a 5-7 cm long structure.

upper boundary starts at the tip of the epiglottis, opposite the 3rd to 4th cervical vertebra

Its lower end is at the lower border of the cricoid cartilage. This lies opposite the 6th cervical vertebra.

Term
Cricothyroidostomy or cricothyrotomy:
Definition

an incision through the skin and cricothyroid ligament/membrane and insertion of a tracheotomy tube into the trachea for relief of acute respiratory obstruction.

When making a skin incision, care must be taken not to injure the anterior jugular veins, which lie near the midline of the neck.

Term

Cricothyroid

Nerve and Action on Vocal Cord

Definition

Nerve: External laryngeal

Action- Tenses: adducts; elongates

Term

Choking and Heimlich Maneuver

Definition

Food stuck in rima glottidis (apperature between vocal folds).

Compression of abdomen expels air from lungs to dislodge the food.

Term

Definition

posterior cricoarytenoid muscle

Abduction of vocal ligaments rima glottidis is opened (widened) by rotating the vocal process of the arytenoids cartilage laterally NEED IT FOR RESPIRATION

Recurrent laryngeal

Term
Cricoarytenoid fixation
Definition
a direct result of restricted joint motion.
Due to RA (rumatoid arthritis), gout, laryngeal trauma.
Symptoms: mild dysphonia, acute airway compromise.
Term
Intrinsic Muscles of Larynx
Definition
move the parts of the larynx – changing the length & tension of the vocal folds and size and shape of the rima glottidis (abduct & adduct vocal cords)

all are innervated by the vagus nerve –
all by recurrent laryngeal n. –EXCEPT cricothyroid m., supplied by external laryngeal n.
ONE MUSCLE IN ABDUCTING
Term
Thyroarytenoid muscles
Definition
Shortening (relaxation) and adduction of vocal ligaments
