Term
Audiology
Definition
A scientific discipline – the study of hearing and hearing disorders.
Term
Sound
Definition
Sound is a type of energy generated by vibrations & carried through the air in the form of pressure waves.

Hearing may take place only when these sound pressure waves reach the ear.
Term
Elasticity
Definition
The rate at which an object that is distorted returns to it’s original shape.
Term
Inertia
Definition
The tendency of an object to remain in its current motion state.

Example: Pendulum
Term
Brownian Motion
Definition
Rapid & random movement of air particles
Term
Waves
Definition
A series of moving impulses set up by a vibration.

Vocal folds vibrate to create waves that we hear.
Term
Compression
Definition
Portion of the sound wave where the molecules of the medium are forced together.

High pressure.
Term
Vibration
Definition
To & fro movement of a mass.
Term
Rarefaction
Definition
The portion of the sound wave where the molecules become less densely packed.

Low pressure.
Term
Waveforms
Definition
Amplitude on vertical axis & time on horizontal axis.
Term
Spectra
Definition
Amplitude on vertical axis & frequency on horizontal axis.
Term
Spectrograms
Definition
Show frequency on the vertical axis, time on the horizontal axis and intensity reflected by the degree of darkness of the tracings.
Term
Waves:
Transverse
Longitudinal
Sine
Definition
Transverse – A wave in which the motion of the molecules of the medium are perpendicular to the direction of the wave. Example: bobber moves up and down while waves move out.
Longitudinal – A wave in which the particles of the medium move along the same access as the wave. Sound waves are longitudinal. Air molecules move parallel to to the direction of the wave motion. Waves and molecules move in the same direction.
Sine – The waveform of a pure tone showing simple harmonic motion.
Term
Cycle
Definition
Complete sequence of events (condensation & rarefaction) of a single sine wave through 360o
Term
Frequency
Definition
The # of complete oscillations of a vibrating body per unit of time. cps or hertz(Hz).
Term
Oscillation
Definition
The back & forth movement of a vibrating body.
Term
Pure Tone
Definition
A tone of only one frequency.
Term
Cosine Wave
Definition
A wave representing simple harmonic motion that begins at 90o.
Term
Kinetic Energy
Definition
Energy of a mass that results from its motion.
Term
Potential Energy
Definition
Energy that results from a fixed& relative position. (Coiled spring).
Term
Free Vibration
Definition
Vibration of a mass independent of any external force.
Example:swinging of a pendulum

Damping – causing the vibrations to cease.
Example:stopping of the pundulum
Term
Forced Vibration
Definition
Vibration of a mass controlled & maintained by and external impetus.

Example: puenulum in clock that has a motor
Term
Simple Sound
Definition
A sound that has all of its energy at one frequency, creating a pure tone.
Very rare
Created by tuning forks and pure-tone audiometers
Term
Complex Sound
Definition
Have energy at more than one frequency.
Human voice, musical instruments, & environmental noises.
Term
Sinusoidal Motion
Definition
Simplest kind of sound wave motion.
Also called simple harmonic motion.
Term
Sine Waves
Definition
The wave created by simple harmonic motion.
