Term

Aseptic Technique

Definition

Certian procedures that are carried out during prep of a sterile product to minimize contamination

Term

Nosocomial (Infection)

Definition

Taking place in a hospital; hospital borne infection

Term

Contamination by Personnel

Definition
Most common form of contamination, followed by contaminated equipment and contaminated raw material; strict adherence to aseptic technique essential to reducing likelihood of contamination
Term

Enviormental Control

Definition

Requirement of aseptic technique

Term

Hoods

Definition

Designed to reduce risk of airborne contamination during preparation of sterile products; provides a constant flow of filtered air to the controlled work area

Term

Three Types of Hoods

Definition

Laminar Flow Hood, Laminar Airflow Workbench (LAFW), Vertical Flow Hood

Term

Two Filters

Definition

Pre-Filter, High Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) Filter

Term

Pre-Filter

Definition

Removes large particles (i.e. lint, dust, &c.)

Term

High Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) Filter

Definition
Removes 99.97% particles & airborne microorganisms 0.3 microns or larger; replaced regularly to sustain work enviroment; require regular maintenance (inspection & cert) q6mo (some q2mo)
Term

Horizontal Hood

Definition

Flows air horizontally across the work area

Term

Vertical Hoods (Biological Safety Cabinets)

Definition
Air flow downward (vertical) onto work area surface; used in prep of antineoplastic & OPHM; some air recirculated & refiltered--remainder vented outside; safer for preparer (air not aimed directly at them, avoiding potential infection through OPHM and small droplets)
Term

OPHM
