Term
Define Articulation
Definition
"Joint" or place where 2 bones meet
Term
What are the functions of articulations?
Definition

1. Give the skeleton mobility

2. Hold bones together

Term
Name and describe 3 structural and 3 Functional articulations.
Definition

Structural:
1. Fibrous- Connective Tissue fibers (no cavity)
2. Cartilaginous- Cartilage (no cavity)
3. Synovial- Fluid filled cavity

Functional:
1. Synarthrosis- immovable
2. Ampiarthrosis- slightly moveable
3. Diarthosis- freely movable

Term
Describe and give examples of Sutures.
Definition

Fibrous joint,

Synarthrotic,

"Seams," bones connected by short fibers on connective tissue,

the edges are interdigitated,

may become ossified in adults,

Ex Skull between cranial bones

Term
Describe and give examples of Syndesmoses.
Definition

Fiberous joint,

varies from synarthrotic to amphiarthotic,

sheet or chord (ligament) of fibrous connective tissue,

fibers are generally short,

EX: ligament at the tibial fibular joint, interosseus membrane or the radius-ulnar joint.

Term
Describe the Gomphosis
Definition

Fiberous joint,

synarthrotic, articulation of tooth with the jaw (mandible & maxilla),

fiberous connective tissue

Term
Define Periontal Ligament
Definition
Fibrous connective tissue that attaches the teeth to the jaw.
Term
Describe and give examples of Synchondrosis.
Definition

Cartilaginous joint,

varies between synarthotic- amphiarthrotic,

Bones connected by a bar/plater of hyaline cartilage,

a little strength and flexibility,

Ex: epiphysial plate, 1st rib & manubrium of strenum

Term
Describe and give examples of symphysis
Definition

Cartilaginous joint,

ampiarthrotic,

fibrocartilage between 2 hyline cartilage plates,

greater strength with some flexibility,

EX: intervertebral joints, pibic symphysis

Term
Describe and give examples of synovial joints.
Definition

articulating bones separated by a fluid filled cavity.

Diarthrotic

Ex: most joints in body especially limbs

Term
What kindof cartilage covers articular sufaces and what is it's purpose?
Definition

Hyline cartilage

Decreases friction, wear on bones, and absorbs shock

Term
What is an articular capsule?
Definition

double layer capsule surroundig the synovial cavity

The exterial layer of the capsule is called a fibrous capsule made of dense irregular c.t.

The inner layer is a synovial membrane made up of areolar c.t.

Term
Describe synovial fluid
Definition

Fill the capsule and articular cartilage

made from the blood so it nourishes the cartilage

thick and vicous

wieght baring and shock absorbing

decreases friction

Term
Describe reinforcing ligaments.
Definition

they direct movement

the more ligaments the stronger the joint

possible to stretch or tear them

if your ligament are the major support than the joint will not be strong.

Term
Where are most reinforcing ligaments found?
Definition

With the articular capsule

called intrinsic/capsular ligaments

Term
How do muscles support bones?
Definition
Muscle tone pulls tendon tight that creates support.
Term
Describe articular disks
Definition

AKA menisci

Wedges of fibrocartilage

Separate the articular surface of bone

Divide synovial flius into cavities

Make joint more stable

Ex. Knee, Jaw (TMJ)

Term
Describe a bursae
Definition

A flattened sac line with synovial membrane and contains synovial fluid

Present were ligaments, tendons, muscle, and skin rub against bone Act as a "ball-bearing"

Maybe present at birth or develope where need later on to protect from excess motion

Ex. Knee, shoulder

Term
Describe tendon sheaths
Definition

Elonged bursae

Wrap around tendons

Term
What are 3 factors affecting the sability of synovial joints?
Definition

Number of ligament

Muscles and tendons

Shap of  articular surface

Term
Describe a glidin/linear movement or joint.
Definition

Simplest

Flat end of bone slips across another flat surface

No angular or rotary movement

Between carpals or tarsals

Term
Define angular movement
Definition
Increase or decrease of the angle between 2 bones
Term
Flexion
Definition
Decrease angle
Term
Extension
Definition
Increase angle
Term
Hyperextension
Definition
Example is the wrist
Term
Abduction
Definition
Move limbs away from midline of body
Term
Adduction
Definition
Move limbs toward midline
Term
Circumduction
Definition
Limb describes a cone 4 angular movements
Term
Dorsiflexion
Definition
Flexing foot
Term
Plantar flexion
Definition
Pointing toes
Term
Rotation
Definition
Rotating around an axis
Term
Supination
Definition
Movement of radius around the ulna where they are parallel palm up
Term
Pronation
Definition
Movement of radius around the ulna where they are crossed over plam down
Term
Inversion
Definition
Moving sole of foot medially
Term
Eversion
Definition
Moving sole of foot laterally
Term
Protration
Definition
Non-angular movement foward
Term
Retraction
Definition
Non-angular movement backward
Term
Elevation
Definition
Up movement along a frontal plane
Term
Depression
Definition
Down movement along a frontal plane
Term
Opposition
Definition
thumb movement across hand or grasping movement
Term
Plane joint
Definition

Flat surfaces that slide across each other

Carpals and tarsals

Term
Hinge Joint
Definition

Joint resembles a mechanial hinge

Extension and flexion can occur

Elbow, phangies

Term
Pivot Joint
Definition

around protrusion extends into the sleeve of another bone

Roation can occur

radius & ulna and atlas & dens

Term
Ellipoidand condyloid
Definition

Articulating oval surfaces

Permit all angular motion

Wrist and knuckle joints

Term
Saddle Joint
Definition

Resemble condylar joint but allow for greater movement

Thumb joint

Term
Ball and Socket joint
Definition

Universal movement allow

Shoulder and Hip joint

Term
