Definition
Humanism is an art form which returns to the subject matter of antiquity/mythology. It shows scientific and atmospheric perspective, and it is the revival of portraiture and Roman Ancestor worship. It also has correct human anatomy.

Sfumato vs. Chiaroscuro
Definition
Sfumato is Leonardo da Vinci's form of painting where he blurs the lines in his painting to seem smooth and realistic. It allows colors and shades to blur gradually into each other. Whereas chiaroscuro is a clear contrast of lights, darks, tones, and shades.

Pope Sixtus IV vs. Pope Julius II
Definition
Pope Sixtus IV was the uncle of Pope Julius II. Sixtus orders the construction of the Sistine Chapel to use as his own personal chapel. He dies, so Julius finishes the job and orders Michelangelo to paint the ceiling.
Sixtus was called the "warrior pope" because he wanted to be a general. He made his cardinals go on military campaigns with him, and wasn't popular bc of this.

A technique where an artist pokes pin sized holes into an image. Charcoal dust is then pressed into these holes.

A common theme in Dutch Baroque art that used reflections in glass as a symbol that "God" is present in the painting.

Extreme lights and darks within a painting. This style is attributed to Michelangelo Caravagio and his followers.

A tool for making sure one has correct perspective. It has mirrors on the inside that reflect what's in front of you.

Seen from below. It is used to describe paintings meant to be seen from an angle where the painting is above you. If not seen from below, the proportions can sometimes be wonky because they are made to be seen from a certain perspective.

Definition
Fictitious architecture. Paintings and frescos that give the sense of otherworldliness, like you're looking up into the heavens and not a ceiling. Examples of this are the Church of the Holy Trinity in Rome, as well as Sant'Ignazio.

French term to describe the "Japanese aesthetic." Many artists, like Degas, were inspired by Japanese woodblocks that used flat planes of color.

Showing flirtation and courting in art, specifically between wealthy individuals. This was first seen in the Rococo period, and was started by Antoine Watteau in his painting Pilgrimage to Cythera.

Said that the apex of all art is from the 5th century Greece. This negatively affected art from other other countries from that time which were seen as not up to par with Greek art.

A rich person thing that rich people would do where they'd go on an exploration through various country, wanting to bring back souvenirs of their travels to show how worldly they are.

Definition
Hassmannization was the destruction of buildings in Paris in order to make boulevards and new buildings. Baron Haussman was hired by the King of France at the time to do this task, but then fired Haussman because it was too much money. Haussman continued doing it anyway.
