Term

Pantheon

Structure:

Definition

The drum supporting the dome has 21 foot thick

     load-bearing walls

The concrete dome is 4 feet thick at the thinnest

point at the top at the rim of the oculus

The coffers in the ceiling lighten the load of the

     dome on the drum

The weight of the concrete dome is estimated to be

9,997,965 pounds. Do the math:  How many tons?

       9,997,965 ÷ 2000 = Approx. 5000 tons

The concrete is strengthened by aggregate (additives)

consisting of lava and ash from nearby volcanic eruptions

Domes make use of the principle of compression

Concrete has tremendous compressive strength but almost

no tensile strength (the ability to bend or flex).
