  Definition of Art:

 Definition of Design:

Definition

A creative process intended

for a specific purpose— generally something

     functional

A creative process subject to aesthetic criteria—generally something non-functional

There is no clear distinction between art and design:  Designs are subjected to aesthetic

criteria and art can serve a function

Term

Principles of Design:

Proportion

Rhythm

Balance

Definition

Tools/concepts for organizing a composition—making use of the elements of design

Relationship between components in a design concerning their relative size or importance

Recurring movement within a design, generally forming a regular or irregular pattern

Sense of equilibrium; the distribution of elements in a design so as to create stability

Term

Mass:

Definition

A body of coherent matter, often of considerable

        size; a considerable assemblage.

Example:  The pyramids.  The overwhelming impression is one of substance (literally and figuratively), permanence,

and stability.  There is a profound sense of form and order

expressed with this mass, derived entirely from

mathematical and solar phenomena.

Term

Mass:    In scientific equations

Definition

 mass = weight

In a composition, the closer an object is to the bottom, the

heavier it seems.  An object in the upper part of a

  composition seems lighter.

Even words and their meanings can have “weight”—or   significance—based on their visual impact: style, position,   size, color and definition.

Figures that are massive convey something different than   those which are not massive.

In architecture, the concept of mass (or even a lack of   mass) can convey different meanings.

Term

Three Primary Pyramids:

Definition

King Khufu

Largest and oldest

Father of Khafre

King Khafre

Second largest and built next after Khufu’s pyramid

Has remains of limestone cap on top

Includes Sphinx as guardian figure

Father of Menkaure

King Menkaure

Smallest of the three

Built the last of the three

Term

Vocabulary:

1.  Additive process:

2.  Subtractive process:

Definition

  the process by which materials

are added to in order to create sculpture or other

      forms.

     ExampleThe pyramids (although the individual

blocks are cut from stone, the pyramids are built by

     stacking millions of blocks.

the process by which

materials are taken away in order to create

     sculpture or other forms.

Example:  The Sphinx.  It is carved from a natural

     outcropping of sandstone.

Term
