Komo mask, wood, tusks, bristles, birdskull, organic material, 19th-20th c. 
 
by utilizing knowledge, the masqeurader is able to tap into the power of the mask. 
 
The Komo mask essentially functions as a wooden support for many different kinds of power subtances and is related to the forces of darkness, danger, and the wilderness. (nyama is the bird skull, mud/blood mixture and horns, the wooden frame is merely the vehicle.

Bamana, which comes from Arabic word Bambara, meaning pagan, is the largest group in the Mande language family.
 
  • Women potters and (especially) male Blacksmiths have considerable ritual power.
  • Blacksmiths=diviners, medicine men, amulet makers. Use nyama.

another distinctions is the association of women with the village and men with the wildernes....but the opposite can also be true.

  • associations are institutions that control the political, social, and supernatural power in the community
  • Function as main patrons for Bamana art.
  • Nyama is underlying source of power controlled by thes institutions.
  • use masks or other ritual objects in their own distinct styles.
Ideas behind Associations Secret Societies:
Intiation, only few may know the secrtes and powers of the society--b/c they are dangerous.

Masquerades can happen on many differnet occasions for several different reasons:

  • initiation rituals
