Term
Granite is what type of rock?
Definition
Igneous
Term
Sandstone and limestone are what kind of rocks?
Definition
Sedimentary
Term
Marble and slate are what kind of rocks?
Definition
Metamorphic
Term

Stone used with little or no shaping is called what?

Definition
Rubble
Term
Stone with slightly shaped edges resulting in vertical joints is called what?
Definition
Squared stone
Term
Highly shaped stone is called what?
Definition
Ashlar or cut stone
Term
Who developed a process to making steel inexpensively in 1856?
Definition
Henry Bessemer
Term
The process of refining the ores to extract the pure metal is know as what?
Definition
Smelting
Term
What's the difference between cold rolling and hot rolling?
Definition

Hot rolling tends to eliminate flaws in the metal.

Cold rolling increases the metal's strength and elastic limit but decreases its ductility

Term
What is the difference between extruding and drawing?
Definition
extruding pushes metal through a die. drawing pulls
Term
What is the process in which metal is reheated and slowly cooled to obtain a more ductile material?
Definition
annealing
Term
Involves heating the metal to a certain temperature and then rapidly cooling it by complete submersion in water or some other liquid?
Definition
Quenching
Term
What's the difference between tempering and quenching?
Definition
tempering does not involve rapid cooling
Term
Where is galvanic action most severe?
Definition
Humid, marine environments
Term
What is a ferrous metal?
Definition
One that contains lots of iron
Term
What is wrought iron?
Definition

Iron with a very low carbon content and a substantial amount of slag.

Sof, ductile, and resitant to corrosion.

Term
What is cast iron?
Definition

Iron with a carbon content above 2%.

Very hard and very brittle.

Term
How much carbon does standard structural steel have?
Definition
0.20% to 0.50%
Term
What is stainless steel?
Definition
Steel alloy containing minimum of 11% chromium.
Term
Describe passivity
Definition
a layer of nonreactive olecules does not allow metal ions at the surface to mitgate into solution.
Term

Stainless steel finishes:

  • No. 3
  • No. 4
  • No. 6
  • No. 7
  • No. 8
Definition
  • No. 3 - an intermediate, dull finish, coarser than no. 4
  • No. 4 - a general purpose polished finish that is dull and prevents mirror reflection.  Most frequent
  • No. 6 - a dull satin finish
  • No. 7 - a highly reflective polished surface
  • No. 8 - the most reflective, used for mirrors and reflectors.
Term

Types of Stainless Steel:

  • Type 302
  • Type 304
  • Type 301
  • Type 316
  • Type 430
Definition

Type 302 - contains 18% chromium and 8 % nickel.

Type 304 - replaced Type 302 because of improved weldability.

Type 301 - similar to Type 302, but with smaller amounts of chromium and nickel. High tensile strength

Type 316 - extreme corrosive environments

Type 430 - no nickel, less corrosion resistant, interior applications

Term
What is main problem with anodized aluminum finish?
Definition
It can be scratched
Term
Difference between bronze and brass?
Definition

bronze is alloy of copper and tin

brass is alloy of copper and zinc

Term
What is difference between bars and plates?
Definition

Bars are rectangular section 6" or less with thickness of 0.203" and greater or 6"-8" with thickness greater than 0.203"

Plates are over 8" in width with thickness of 0.230" and over or over 28" in width with a thickness of 0.180" or over

Term
What is yard lumber and factory and shop lumber?
Definition

Yard lumber is used for structural purposes and rough framing

Factory and shop lumber - Making door frames, windows, and finish items.

Term
Advantages of platform and balloon framing?
Definition

platform - each floor can be completed and used for constructing the next, shorter studs cost less

balloon - vertical shrinkage is limited

Term
What are advantages of SIPs?
Definition
  • Decreased construction time
  • Improved insulation value with no thermal bridges
  • Reduced air infiltration
  • Strong than conventional stud and sheating construction
  • Very flat for subsequent finishes
  • Dimenional stability
Term
Define Thermoset plastics?
Definition
Those that permanently harden when they are subjected to heat and then cured. EPDM, CSPE
Term
Define Thermoplastic materials?
Definition
Can be repeatedly softened with heat and then harden again when cooled. PVC, TPO
Term
What color are PVC and TPO
Definition
white. good for cool roof systems
Term
Is TPO more expensive than EPDM?
Definition
TPO is cheaper than EPDM
Term
When are reinforced membranes a good idea?
Definition
high wind conditions and where heavy foot traffic is expected.  Must be fully adhered or mechanically attached.
Term
What are liquid applied roofings good for?
Definition
roofs with complex shapes like thin-shell concrete domes.
Term
Can all glass doors be fire rated?
Definition
No
