Term
Cohesion
Definition
Property of water, caused by H-bonds between molecules, aids water and nutrient movement against gravity in plants
Term
Adhesion
Definition
Clinging of one substance to another, holds water to the sides of containers creating a meniscus
Term
Surface Tension
Definition
Related to cohesion, measure of how difficult it is to stretch or break the surface of a liquid. Water has a higher tension than most liquids
Term
Kinetic Energy
Definition
The energy of motion, in atoms and molecules because they are alway in motion
Term
Heat
Definition
A measure of the total amount of kinetic energy due to molecular motion is in a body of matter
Term
Celsius Scale
Definition
For measuring temperature. At sealevel water freezes at 0 and boils at 100, avg human body temp is 37 and room temp is 20-25
Term
Calorie
Definition
The amount of energy it takes to raise the temperature of 1 gram of water 1 degree celsius, also the amount of energy released when 1 gram of water cools 1 degree celsius
Term
KiloCalorie
Definition
(Kcal), 1000 calories, or the amount of energy required to raise 1 kilogram of water 1 degree cesius
Term
Joule
Definition
Another measure of energy. It is equal to .239 cal, and one calorie equals 4.3 Joules
Term
Specific Heat
Definition
The amount of heat that must be absorbed or lost for 1g of that substance to change its temperature by 1 degree celsius. For water it is 1 calorie per gram per degree celsius. Water will change its temperature less when it absorbs or loses a given amount of heat
Term
Heat of Vaporization
Definition
Quantity of heat a liquid must absorb for 1g of it to be converted from the liquid to the gaseous state. Waters is also high. Caused by H bonds Helps moderate Earth's temperature
Term
Evaporative Cooling
Definition
As a liquid evaporates, the surface of the liquid that remains cools down. This is because the "hottest" molecules are the ones to leave and go into gas. EX: himan sweat
Term
Why does ice float?
Definition
Because of the H bonds keeping the molecules of water at a greater distance which creates a less dense form
Term
Solution
Definition
A liquid that is a completely homogeneous mixture of 2 or more substances
Term
Solvent
Definition
The dissolving agent of a solution
Term
Solute
Definition
The substance that is dissolved in a solvent
Term
Aqueous Solution
Definition
One in which water is the solvent
Term
Hydration Shell
Definition
The sphere of water molecules around each dissolved ion. As when water dissolves NaCl crystals
Term
Hydrophilic
Definition
A substance with an affinity for water, water loving
Term
Hydrophobic
Definition
A substance that has a lesser affinity for water, water avoiding
Term
Colloid
Definition
A stable suspension of fine particles in a liquid
Term
Molecular Mass
Definition
The sum of the masses of all the atoms in a given molecule
Term
Mole
Definition
6.02 X 10 to the 23rd power. Avogadro's number
Term
Molarity
Definition
The number of moles of solute per liter of solution. Unit of concentration used by biologists
Term
Dissociation of water
Definition
When the H bond in water is broken it forms one H+ ion and one OH- ion, then the free H+ ion joins with a water molecule to form Hydronium or H3O+
Term
Acid
Definition
A solution with a higher H+ ion concentration. Created when acids donate additional H+ ion to a solution. They have pH of <7 on the pH scale
Term
Bases
Definition
A substance that decreases the H+ concentration, some directly accept the free H+ ions and some lose OH- ion which bond to the free H+. They have pH >7 on the pH scale
Term
pH of a substance
Definition
The negative Logarithm (base 10) of the H+ concentration
Term
Buffer
Definition
ubstances that minimize changes in the concentration of H+ and OH- in a solution. Ex: Buffers act to keep human blood at about pH 7.4
