MOA: disruption of urate deposition and subsequent inflammatory reaction

Use: Gout prophylaxis, prevention of progression

 

MOA: decreases urate reabsorption in the proximal tubules.

-non-selective blockade of ACTIVE renaltransport of organic acid

-includes secretion and reabsorption

-effect depends on net effect of active secretion and reabsorption

 

Interactions: variety of drugs due to non-selective blockade, e.g. pcn naproxen

 

C/I: acute attack

 

A/E: hypersensitivity, gi sx

 

Teaching points: increase in freq duration and severity of attacks may occur the first 6-12 months of therapy

-to minimize stones maintain high fluid intake (2L+) and alkalinize the urine

MOA: inhibits uric acid production

 

Prodrug converted by xanthine oxidase

 

A/E: as uric acid decreases, dissolution of deposits can occur

--> disruption in urate equilibrium and acute attacks

 

*can give with colchicine
