Term
In what region of the country is animal production more heavily concentrated and why?
Definition
The Central Region of the United States because of suitable soil fertility, topography, rainfall, and other climatic conditions.
Term
Describe an example of a significant geographic shift in the livestock or poultry industry, and suggest some reasons for that shift.
Definition
During the mid twentieth century the center of the beef cow industry shifted toward the southeast, prompted in part by the conversion of cotton land to grass, improved insect control, and availability of cattle more tolerant of heat. These shifts may be responses to feed supply, transportation, labor availability, or other external factors, the changes are invariable initiated by individual people who see opportunity in a different location or a different form of business.
Term
List 4 Different career opportunities for veterinarians.
Definition
A veterinarian can work in a private or corporate clinical practice, they can serve in federal or stage governmental agencies, work for animal health and pharmaceutical companies.
Term
In what species has the development and marketing of breeding stock moved from the farm or ranch to specialized genetics companies?
Definition
poultry
Term
Who "controls" the animal industry-has the most influence on its long term viability and success?
Definition
The animal industry is consumer controlled. The industry is successful only to the extent it meets consumer desires, in quality, quantity, and the form in which it is provided to the consumer.
Term
List several scientific disciplines within animal science where information is constantly being gathered by dedicated researchers.
Definition
Nutrition, Environmental physiology and Animal Management, Animal Health, Genetics and Animal Reproduction, etc.
Term
How was BST developed and made available to dairy producers?
Definition
Through molecular biotechnology, genes can be transferred from one organism to another unrelated organism to produce a transgenic organism. The newly engineered E. Coli organisms are multiplied in large quantities though fermentation techniques. Then they are harvested, killed, and their protein separated, purified, and formulated for use in dairy cows. With most cows and with excellent management practices, milk yield increases of 10-20 percent and feed efficiency improvement of 5-10 percent can be expected
Term
Define genome and give some reasons why animal genome maps are being developed
Definition
Animal genome maps are being developed because the precise information gathered to date has allowed dramatic benefit, allowing the transfer of specific genes form one species to another to augment product quality or disease resistance.
Term
List three services provided by governmental and educational agencies to producers, consumers, or others.
Definition
The USDA has developed relative quality and product grades as a guide for the consumer or retailer. , research is being done in the animal and related sciences, and many privately financed organization serve the animal industries.
