What are different types of animal bites?
Definition
- Dogs - more common, less serious
- Cats - more serious, deeper. At high risk for infection.
- Bats - lead to rabies
- Arms and legs are most commonly bitten

What is initial tx for an animal bite?
Definition
- Must properly clean wound with soap/water
- Irrigate w/ pressure
- Do not close puncture wounds
- Update tetanus, prevent rabies
- Wrap in sterile gauze, elevate. Cat bites more serious than dogs!

What antibiotics treat animal bites?
Definition
- Drug of choice: Augmentin 875 BID or 500 TID
- Doxycycline is an alternative except in young kids and pregnant women
**High risk: Ampicillin-sulbactam, Cefuroxime, ticarcillin, zosyn

What wounds are prone to tetanus?
Definition
- Wounds > 6 hours old
- Jagged wounds, crushing wounds
- Infected wounds, contaminated wounds
- Wounds from a non-sterile injection aka a bite!
**Boosters should be updated every 10 years

What causes rabies?
Definition
Usually through BAT bites - incubates for 1-3 months.
**CNS symptoms including anxiety, dysphagia, seizures, coma..
Consider post exposure prophylaxis for a bat bite or a high risk area. Otherwise wait for test results.
