Term
Middle Superior Alveolar (MSA)
Definition
Needle: short 25/27
Penetration Site: height of mucobuccal fold above the second premolar
Depth of Insertion: variable, needle tip inserted to a point well above apex of second premolar
Angle of Insertion: needle directed 20 degrees medially bevel toward bone
Landmarks: well above apex of 2nd premolar
Dose: .9-1.2 ml
Anesthetized: maxillary premolars and mesiobuccal root of first molar and facial to affected teeth
Term
Anterior Superior Alveolar (ASA)
Definition
Needle: short 25/27
Penetration Site: height of mucobuccal fold above canine
Depth of Insertion: variable, needle tip inserted to a point above apex of canine
Angle of Insertion: needle directed 25 degrees medially bevel toward bone
Landmarks: above apex of canine
Dose: .9-1.2 ml
Anesthetized: canine, lateral, central and facial to affected teeth
Term
Posterior Superior Alveolar (PSA)
Definition
Needle: short 25/27
Penetration Site: height of mucobuccal fold above 2nd molar
Depth of Insertion: needle tip inserted to a depth of 16 mm
Angle of Insertion: needle advanced along a path 45 degrees medially to midsaggital plane, 45 degrees superior to occlusal plane
Landmarks: slightly above and distal to distobuccal root of last molar, 2nd or 3rd if present
Dose: .9-1.8 ml
Anesthetized: maxillary molars except mesiobuccal root of 1st molar and buccal to affected teeth
Term
Maxillary Infiltration
Definition
Needle:extra-short or short 25/27/30 Penetration Site: height of mucobuccal fold buccal to tooth Depth of Insertion: needle tip inserted to a depth of 3-6 mm to apex Angle of Insertion: approx. 20 degrees to long axis of tooth, directed toward apex of tooth bevel toward bone Landmarks: selected soft tissue, gingival or apex of tooth Dose: .6 ml Anesthetized: at injection site
Term
Nasopalatine (NP)
Definition
Needle: extra-short or short 30/27
Penetration Site: past lateral to incisive papilla at widest aspect
Depth of Insertion: 6-10 mm
Angle of Insertion: approach at 45 degrees at anterior palate bevel toward palate
Landmarks: incisive foramen beneath incisive papilla
Dose: less than or equal to .4 ml
Anesthetized: palatal to incisors and canines
Term
Greater Palatine (GP)
Definition
Needle: extra-short or short 30/27
Penetration Site: in the anterior depression of the GP foramen, at junction of palatine bone and alveolar process above and lingual to 2nd molar
Depth of Insertion: needle inserted to 4-6 mm
Angle of Insertion: from opposite side of mouth at right angle to target area bevel toward palate
Landmarks: greater palatine foramen
Dose: .4-.6 ml
Anesthetized: palatal tissues of posterior teeth
Term
Inferior Alveolar (IA) w/ Lingual
Definition
Needle: long 25/27
Penetration Site: Medial to internal oblique ridge, lateral to pterygomandibular raphe, at or above height of coronoid notch
Depth of Insertion: 2/3 to 3/4 length of needle, until contact with bone, bevel toward bone
Angle of Insertion: 2/3 to 3/4 length of needle, until contact with bone, bevel toward bone
Landmarks: on medial surface of ramus, slightly superior to mandibular foramen
Dose: 1.5-1.8 ml
Anesthetized: all teeth in quadrant and all periodontium
Term
Mental (M)
Definition
Needle: short 25/27
Penetration Site: mucobuccal fold at or just anterior to mental foramen
Depth of Insertion: 5-6mm
Angle of Insertion: approx. 20 degrees to long axis of premolars, bevel toward bone
Landmarks: slightly superior to mental foramen (keep pressure over foramen for 1 min. after injection)
Dose: .6 ml
Anesthetized: pulpal limited to tooth at site of infiltration and premolars to midline
Term
Buccal
Definition
Needle: short or long 25/27
Penetration Site: mucous membrane distal and lateral to most posterior molar
Depth of Insertion: less than or greater to 4mm, bevel under tissue, bevel toward bone
Angle of Insertion: syringe parallel to occlusal plane, lateral to teeth, bevel toward bone
Landmarks: supraperiosteal, distal, and buccal to most posterior molar
Dose: .2-.3 ml
Anesthetized: buccal to molars
