Term
IA
Definition
Field of Anesthesia: all teeth in quadrant, all periodontium, buccal mucosa premolars to midline, floor of mouth and 1/2 of tongue in quadrant.
Penetration Site: medial to internal oblique ridge, lateral to pterygomandibular raphe, at or above height of coronoid notch.
Landmarks to help ID: pterygomandibular raphe, coronoid notch on anterior border of ramie and the internal oblique ridge on medial surface.
Length of needle: long 25/27 gauge
Angle of insertion: 2/3-3/4 length of needle until contact with the bone, bevel toward the bone.
Penetration:2/3-3/4 of needle until contact with the bone, bevel toward the bone.
Amount of Anesthesia: 1.5-1.8 ml
Term
Buccal
Definition
Field of anesthesia: no teeth, buccal to molars soft tissue/periodontium.
Penetration site: mucous membrane distal and lateral to most posterior molar.
Landmarks to help ID: coronoid both and buccal mocosa and gingiva of the mabdibular molars.
Length of needle: short 25/27 gauge if given alone, long if given with IA.
Angle of insertion:syringe parallel to occlusal plane, lateral to teeth, bevel toward bone.
Penetration: less than or equal to 4mm, bevel toward bone.
Amount of anesthesia:0.2-0.3 ml
Term
Mental
Definition
Field of anesthesia: pupal limited to tooth at site of infiltration, premolars to midline of periodontium.
Penetration site: mucobuccal fold at or just anterior to mental foremen.
Landmarks to help ID: spices of first and second premolars.
Length of needle: short 25/27 gauge.
Angle of insertion: about 20 degrees to long axis of premolars, bevel toward bone.
Penetration:5-6 mm
Amount of anesthesia: 0.6 ml
Term
PASA
Definition
Field of anesthesia: central, lateral and canine teeth, periodontium of affected teeth.
Penetration site: infiltration-lateral to incisive papilla on midline. Block- center of papilla on midline.
Landmarks to help ID: incisive papilla and incisive foramen.
Length of needle extra short or short 30/27 gauge.
Angle of insertion: approach at 45 degree angle bevel toward palate.
Penetration: 6-10 mm
Amount of anesthesia: 1.4-1.8 ml
Term
Infiltration-Mandible/Maxilla
Definition
Field of anesthesia: injection site
Penetration site: mucobuccal fold buccal to tooth.
Landmarks to help ID: selected soft tissue, gingiva or apex of tooth.
Length of needle: extra short or short 25/27/30 gauge.
Angle of insertion: about 20 degrees to long axis of tooth, directed toward apex of tooth, bevel toward tooth.
Penetration: 3-6 mm to apex.
Amount of anesthesia: 0.6 ml
Term
GP
Definition
Field of anesthesia: no teeth, palatial tissues of posterior teeth.
Penetration site: in anterior depression of the GP foramen, at junction of palatine bone and alveolar process above and lingual to second molar.
Landmarks to help ID: greater palatine foramen.
Length of needle: extra short or short 30/27 gauge.
Angle of insertion:from opposite side of mouth at right angle to target area bevel toward palate.
Penetration: 4-6 mm less than 10mm.
Amount of anesthesia: 0.4-0.6 ml
Term
ASA
Definition
Field of anesthesia: canine, lateral, central teeth and facial to affected teeth
Penetration site: height of mucobuccal fold above canine.
Landmarks to help ID: apex of canine
Length of needle: short 25/27 gauge
Angle of insertion: needle directed 25 degrees medically bevel toward bone
Penetration: variable, needle tip inserted to a point above apex of canine
Amount of anesthesia: 0.9-1.2 ml
Term
MSA
Definition
Field of anesthesia: maxillary premolars and mesiobuccal root of first molar and facial to affected teeth
Penetration site: height of mucobuccal fold above the second premolar
Landmarks to help ID: apex of second molar
Length of needle: short 25/27 gauge
Angle of insertion: needle directed 20 depress medially bevel toward bone
Penetration: variable, needle tip inserted to a point well above apex of second molar
Amount of anesthesia: 0.9-1.2 ml
Term
PSA
Definition
Field of anesthesia: maxillary molars except mesiobuccal root of first molar and buccal to affected teeth.
Penetration site: height of mucobuccal fold above second molar
Landmarks to help ID: distobuccal root of last molar
Length of needle: short 25/27 gauge
Angle of insertion: needle advanced along path 45 degrees medially to midsaggital plane, 45 degrees superior to occlusal plane.
Penetration: 16 mm
Amount of anesthesia: 0.9-1.8 ml
