IRON
SIDE EFFECTS: nausea, epigastric pain, constipation and diarrhea (take with meals to reduce it) but absorbed best without food, acute toxicity in kids (tx with chelators), hemochromatosis and hemosiderosis, cramps, black stools
Other: oral, IV if with iron deficiency anemia who cannot absorb it, not enteric coated, limited course, can lead to death

CHELATOR
USE: treat iron toxicity
Mechanism: chelate Fe
Other: oral, fecal excretion of iron
Side effects: headache, renal toxicity
Term
desferoxamine
Definition
CHELATOR
USE: treat iron toxicity
Mechanism: chelate Fe
Other: IV, fecal and urinary excretion of iron
SIde Effects: ototoxicity, ocular toxicity
Term
vitam B12
Definition
VITAMIN
USE: oral preps can supplement a deficient diet, IV for pernicious anemia, postgastrectomy and small bowel resection, malabsorption syndromes
Other: seen in meat, eggs, dairy products, absorption requires pancreatic proteases and gastric intrinsic factor, transported by transcobalamin in the plasma, stored in liver, can take years to get anemia
Malabsorption may be due to lack of IF in autoimmunity, post-gastrectomy, congential, or small bowel abnormalities in IBD and post resection
Term
EPO
Definition
HEMATOPOIETIC GROWTH FACTOR
USE: anemia of chronic renal failure, anemia of progressive renal failure without dialysis, anemia of patients with AIDS treated with AZT, anemai associated with cancer chemo, preoperatively to make blood for autologous transfusion
MEchanism: stimulates proliferation, maturation and hemoglobin formation by committed erythroid progeneitors and CFU-erythrocyte, acts with IL-3 and GM-CSF to expand the BFU-erythrocyte, stimulates early release of reticulocytes from marrow into circulation
Other: made by peritubular cells in proximal tubule of the kidney
Side Effects: increased clotting during dialysis, hypertension and seizures , allergic reactions infrequent and mild, increased thrombosis, cancer progression
Term
G-CSF
Definition
HEMATOPOIETIC GROWTH FACTOR
Mechanism: stimulate granulocyte colonies and neutrophil production, promotes release of granulocytes from marrow
Term
GM-CSF
Definition
HEMATOPOIETIC GROWTH FACTOR
Mechanism: with IL-3 stimulates colonies and proliferation of granulocytes, monocytes, macrophages, megakaryocytes
