Definition
A naval battle fought between an Alliance of Greek city-states and the Empire of Persia in September 480 BC. The Greek Athenian statesman, Themistocles, lured (tricked) the Persians into the narrow straights of Salamis thus giving the Greeks the advantage over the Persians who outnumbered them 2 to 1.

This was the "state of the art" fighting ship designed to be able to cover long distances quickly under oar and sail, and in battle to ram enemy ships with devastating effect. This was the Trireme's most important feature.
