Why did the colonists begin to smuggle goods in and out of the colonies?
Definition
The colonists smuggled goods due to the taxes Britain imposed on daily goods such as tea, sugar, paint and paper. Britain also required all colonial imports and exports to be transported on British ships. As a result, American colonists boycotted British goods and shipping laws in favor of smuggled goods.

Definition
King George issued this to prevent colonists from settling west of the Appalachian Mts. and therefore avoiding the expense of protecting them from Native American Indians.

Definition
8 British soldiers were taunted and abused by a mob of 200 colonists. During the conflict, a British musket accidentally fired, which prompted other soldiers to fire in the confusion. 5 colonists were killed, including Crispus Attucks, an African-American and the “first casualty of the American Revolution”

How did the Boston Massacre unite the colonies against Great Britain?
Definition
Paul Revere create his engraving depicting the event as aggressive and violent behavior by the British alone. This propaganda proved to be successful as it became a rally cry for the colonists against British aggression.

Definition
It united all 13 colonies to declare themselves independent from Great Britain. It established the United States of America as a free and independent nation, and inspired other nations to do the same in their quest for independence.

Definition
Colonists fought on their own land, had “home field advantage”
Colonists had more motivation to succeed because they were fighting for an idea-Freedom and Independence, not for a king
America benefited from extraordinary leadership, both political and military (ex. Washington, Jefferson, Hamilton, Franklin, Adams)
Colonists fought with their own rules of war, didn’t follow conventional British warfare (ex. Killing British officers, guerilla warfare)

Mary Ludwig Hays, a “Molly Pitcher” cook and nurse who was given military responsibilities as a American sergeant in battle. She was an example of the role of women who followed and supported the American Colonial army as their families, homeland and lives were threatened by British rule
