Was taken by the family to establish a school in Bermuda but they ended up stranded in New England. The family eventually returned to Europe but Smibert stayed and became the greatest painter in America.

Worked in Newport, Rhode Island. Everybody looks exactly the same even though a couple of them aren't even related.

Waldo fought in the French and Indian War. This is one of the first comissioned works by the government. The telescope and war in the background are really the only hints that this is a military portrait.

West invented neoclassicism-- Winckelmann, a German guy, came to Italy to work on an excavation and wrote in favor of imitation of Greek art for artistic enlightenment, so West started to do it.
