(Proventil, Ventolin)

Action:                     

Relaxes bronchial smooth muscles

Reduces airway resistance

Indications:           

Bronchospasm caused by:

Acute Asthma, Emphysema, Bronchitis

Toxic Gas Inhalation, Near Drowning

Drug Overdose, Pulmonary Edema

Crush Syndrome:

   -       Suspected hyperkalemia

   -       Crush force > 4 hours

Contraindications:

Cardiovascular

tremors     

nervousness                                                                   headache/dizziness

Respiratory           

cough                    

wheezing

Gastrointestinal

nausea

Administration:                  

Respiratory-  5mg in 6cc NS by hand held nebulizer/mask

                   over 5-15 minutes. May repeat PRN.

Crush syndrome- 5mg in 6cc NS continuous mask nebulizer

Pediatric:     

0-1 year:  2.5mg. in 3cc NS by hand held nebulizer/mask over 5-15 minutes. May repeat PRN.

Over 1 year: Same as adult dose.

Crush syndrome: Same as adult dose.
