Term
Cargo Bin
Definition
A cargo compartment or commonly referred to as a cargo bin, is that part of the aircraft where passengers baggage and cargo is stored
Term
Fuselage
Definition
the body, a ridged structure on which the aircraft compartments, wings, tail, engine are mounted
Term
Nose
Definition
The forward section of an aircraft. Includes flight deck where you can find the captain and 1st officer. This area also includes flight instruments and navigational aids
Term
Flaps
Definition
hinged portion of wings located on trailing edges. Cover the section of the wing from the fuselage to aileron. They provide additional lift to compensate for slower air speeds associated with landing
Term
Aileron
Definition
A hinged portion on the trailing edge of the wing. It raises and lowers to control the rolling motion of the aircraft.
Term
Nacelle
Definition
The protective covering surrounding the aircraft engine
Term
Landing gear
Definition
Made up of the nose and main gears. The nose gear is located directly under the nose of the aircraft
Term
Trailing edge
Definition
Back portion of the wing
Term
Leading edge
Definition
Front portion of the wing
Term
Gear pins
Definition
placed in the nose and main gear of aircraft that require maintenance or are being towed. A safety measure to prevent a landing gear from collapsing while the aircraft is being towed.
Term
Tail
Definition
The empennage or more commonly referred to as tail section, consists of the rudder, various tabs, vertical and horizontal stabilizer, and elevator
Term
Rudder
Definition
Located on the vertical stabilizer of aircraft. The left to right movement of aircraft is controlled by this.
Term
Control tabs
Definition
Control tabs are located on the elevator and rudder. They aid the pilot in flight by decreasing control forces ie air stream resistance that resists control tab movement
Term
Horizontal and vertical stabilizers
Definition
Contribute to aircraft's stability
Term
Elevators
Definition
Located Horizontal stabilizer of aircraft. The raising and lowering of the nose is controlled by this
Term
The four forces
Definition
Lift, gravity, thrust, drag
Term
Lift
Definition
Created by wing moving through air
Term
Gravity
Definition
Total weight log aircraft
Term
Thrust
Definition
Created by the engine rotating the propeller/fan blades and overcomes drag
Term
Drag
Definition
The friction and turbulence of the air passing around and over the aircraft
Term
Airfoils
Definition
Aircraft wings. There is a higher curve over top of wing than below the wing
Term
Takeoff
Definition
The power moves the plane forward faster and faster until at the proper speed, there is enough airflow over the wings to generate enough lift to overcome the weight
Term
Descent
Definition
Pilot reduces power, the drag slows airplane, with less airflow over the wings, there is less lift generated and the weight overcomes lift
