Term
What are Newton's Laws of Motion?
Definition
Inertia
Acceleration
Action/Reaction
Term
Law of Inertia
Definition
A body at rest will remain at rest, and a body in motion will remain in motion at the same speed and in the same direction unless acted upon by an external force.
Term
Law of Acceleration
Definition
The force required to produce a change in motion of a body is directly proportional to its mass and rate of change in its velocity.
Term
Law of Action/Reaction
Definition
For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. When an interaction occurs between two bodies, equal forces in opposite directions are imparted to each body.
Term
Chord Line
Definition
The straight line intersecting leading and trailing edges of the airfoil.
Term
Relative Wind
Definition
Air in motion equal to and opposite the flight-path velocity of the airfoil.
Term
Angle of Attack (AOA)
Definition
The angle measured between the resultant relative wind and the chord line.
Term
Angle of Incidence
(Fixed Wing)
Definition
The angle between the airfoil chord line and longitudinal axis or other selected reference plane of the airplane.
Term
Total Aerodynamic Force
Definition
As air flows around an airfoil, a pressure differential develops between the upper and lower surfaces. The differential, combined with air resistance to passage of the airfoil, creates a force on the airfoil.
Lift + Drag
Term
What are the force vectors on aircraft in flight?
Definition
Thrust
Lift
Drag
Weight
