  • each are present for a significant portion of time during 1mth period (or less if successfully treated)
  • delusions

  • or when  the onset  is in childhood or adolescence , failure to achieve expected level of interpersonal, academic, or ocupational functioning.

  • or 2 or more symptoms listed in Criteria A present in attenuated form (odd beliefs, unusual perceptual experience)

Schizophrenia Subtypes: Paranoid, Disorganized, and Undifferentiated Types p314-16
Definition

Paranoid type:

  1. criterion A: Preoccupation with 1 or more delusions or frequent auditory hallucinations
  2. criterion B: None of the following is prominent: disorganized speech, disorganized or catatonic behavior, or flat or inappropriate affect

Disorganized type:

criterion A: All of the following  are prominent:

  • disorganized speech, behavior
  • flat or inappropriate affect

criterion B: The criteria are not met for Catatonic type

 

Undifferentiated type:

A type of Schizophrenia in which symptoms that meet criteria A are present, but the criteria are not met for Paranoid, Disorganized, or Catatonic types.

Catatonic type: at least 2 of the following

  • motoric immobility (muscle rigidity) evident by waxy flexibility(catalepsy)
  • excessive motor activity
  • extreme negativism - resistance to movement
  • peculiar voluntary movement/posturing
  • echolalia -parrot-like repetition of word or phrase

Residual type:

  • There is continuing evidence of the disturbancemay as indicated by the presence of negative symptoms
  • or 2 or more symptoms listed in Criteria A present in attenuated form (odd beliefs, unusual perceptual experience)

  3. good premorbid social and occupational functioning
  4. absence of blunted or flat affect

An uninterrupted period of illness during which at some time, there is either a Major Depressive (depressed mood), manic, mixed episodes concurrent with symptoms that meet criteria A for Schizophrenia

 

criterion B:

During the same period of illnessthere have been delusions and hallucinations for at least 2wks in the absence of prominent mood symptoms

 

criterion C:

Symptoms that meet criteria for a mood episode are present for a substantial portion of the total duration of the active and residual periods of the illness.

 

criterion D:

The disturbance is not due to the direct physiological effects of a substance or gmc.
