Cards

Term

Etiology

Definition
Causal pattern, or when one or more causal factor lead to a disorder.
Term

Necessary Cause

Definition
A condition that must be present for a disorder to occur; If a disorder occurs then "cause" must procede it.
Term

Sufficient Cause

Definition
A condition that guarantees the occurance of a disorder. If "cause" occurs then disorder will occur.
Term

Contributory Cause

Definition
One that increases the probability of a disorder. If "cause" occurs then the probability that the disorder will occur increases.
Term

Diathesis

Definition
A predisposition toward developing a disorder. Which can derive from biological, psychological, or sociocultural causal factors.
Term

Diathesis-stress model

Definition
When a mental disorder is developed due to a combination of diathesis and stress.
Term

Stress

Definition
The RESPONSE of an individual to taxing demands.
Term

Distal Cause

Definition
May precede disorder by decades. ie: early childhood loss leads to adult depression

Proximal causal factor

Definition
Occurs close in time to disorder onset

Definition
Occurs after the disorder and causes it to be maintained.
Term

Term

Biological Viewpoint

Definition

Four categories that are relevant to maladaptive bahvior

2) Gentetic vulnerability

3) Temperament

4) Brain dysfunction and neural plasticity

Term

Genetic Vulnerability

Definition
Is related to the Genotype (total genetic endowment) and Phenotype (Observed characteristic or what is observed).
Term

Genotype-Enviornment Correlations

How an individual's genotype may shape their enviornment

Definition

1) Passive effect - The inidivuals genotype does not shape the enviornment as much as the others around them do. ie: a child's genotype that is similar to that of the parents may be shaped and supported more by the parents than their own.

2) Evocative effect - When a child's genotype may evoke particular kinds of reactions from the social and physical enviornment. ie: happy babies evoke happy, positive reactions from parents thus reinforcing their happy behaviors.

3) Active effect - When a child's genotype plays a more active role in shaping their enviornment. ie: an extravert may seek out others to befirend thus building thier own enviornment "niche building"

Term

Genotype-environment interactions

Definition
People with different genotypes may be differentially sensitive or susceptable to their enviornments.
Term

Temperment

Definition

  2. Irritability
