what is the arnold nerve?

3 important things:
1) reflex
2 & 3) pathology
Definition
auricular branch of the vagus nerve. Found in the outer ear canal. 3 important things:

1) If stimulated (e.g. with a speculum) it can cause patient to cough/pass out (arnold reflex)
2) may be involved in glomus jugulare tumor
3) person with laryngeal cancer could have referred pain to the back of the ear because of it.

Cardiovascular issues (e.g. left ventricular heart failure), ACEis, asthma, purtussis, postnasal drip, irritation of arnolds nerve, GERD

note: cough can also be the symptom of a systemic disease (e.g. vasculitis, sarcoidosis), so a general exam should always be performed

carcinoid tumor, early interstitial lung disease, bronchiectasis, and atypical mycobacterial pulmonary infection.

A CT is only performed after all other causes of an x-ray negative chronic cough have been ruled out
