Term
atmosphere is a mixture of gases
Definition
-nitrogen (78 percent), oxygen (21 percent), argon (1 percent), and trace gases, such as water vapor and carbon dioxide.
Term

how does the atmosphere is classified into four layers ?

Definition

-The atmosphere is classified into four layers according to the temperature gradient.

-The temperature decreases with altitude in the troposphere, the first layer; then similarly increases in the stratosphere, the second layer; decreases in the mesosphere, the third layer; and increases in the thermosphere (ionosphere), the fourth layer.

Term

troposphere

Definition

-  is the lowest portion of Earth's atmosphere. It contains approximately 75% of the atmosphere's mass and 99% of its water vapor and aerosols.

-the layer in which weather occurs, supports life on Earth.

Term

stratosphere

Definition
-is less dense than the troposphere but has a similar composition except that this second layer is nearly devoid of water.
Term
thermosphere
Definition

-the outermost layer of the atmosphere, is almost devoid of air and receives the direct rays of the Sun.

-provides a good illustration of the difference between temperature and heat.
