Term
Describe the role of microorganisms in producing diseases in horses and food and fiber animals. What special considerations to we have to keep in mind when dealing with bacterial, viral, and other microorganisms in farm animals
Definition
2 broad groups of microorganisms
- saprophytes (good guys)
- pathogens (bad guys)
a few, depending on circumstance, fit either category

most pathogens are parastitc in that they survive at the expense of their host, many tend to have an affinity for certain tissues and vary in mode of action

a white cell count is useful in determining the presence of a bacterial infxn and in distinguishing between a bacterial and viral infxn – w/ active bacterial infxn almost always an increase in the WBC count, called leukocytosis, The opposite, leukopenia, is commonly seen with viral dzs
Term
• Passive Immunity
Definition
The short-term immunity that results from the introduction of antibodies from another person or animal.
Term
• Active Immunity
Definition
The immunity that results from the production of antibodies in response to an antigen
Term
• Antiserum
Definition
A blood serum containing antibodies against specific antigens, injected to treat or protect against specific diseases.
Term
• Globulin
Definition
Any of a group of simple proteins soluble in salt solutions and forming a large fraction of blood serum protein.
Term
• Bacterins
Definition
– killed bacterial cultures
– Produced by growing bacteria in artificial media in the lab and then killing it with chemicals, uv light, irradiation or gene modification
– Can get a specific bacterial protein (antigen) into animal w/o risk of clinical dz
– Widely used to protect against leptospirosis, blackleg, malignant edmena, swine erysipelas, and a variety of other dzs
– Bacterin induced immunity is usually of med duration and rarely lasts more than a yr
– Two or more doses have to be give to yield satisfactory protection
Term
• Attenuation
Definition
when the virus is adapted to an unusual host cell, propagated through serial passage until it ultimately loses its virulence and capacity to produce dz
Term
• Gene cloning
Definition
– when sufficient antigenic material cannot be produced by separating it from the pathogen, antigenic material can be placed in other harmless organisms
Term
• Modified Live Virus Vaccines
Definition
- have an important disadvantage, although they will gen produce a long-lasting immunity they will occas cause the illness because most are a compromise between antigenicity and attenuation. The most effective in producing immunity are those having the least attenuation
