What is the latent stage of TB?
Definition
no symptoms, don't feel sick (not infectious and cannot spread TB infections to others) You can become active again
- Only sign is a positive reaction to the TB skin test or TB blood test

What causes tb?
Definition
germ called mycobacterium tuberculosis that is spread from person to person through the air. Usually affects the lungs, but can also affect other parts, such as brain, the kidneys, or the spine. Droplets in air. If another person inhales droplet, they too can be infected. True airborne droplet

What are the general symptoms of TB?
Definition
unexplained weight loss, loss of appetite, night sweats, fever, fatigue, chills, coughing for 3 weeks or longer, hemoptysis, chest pain

What is the treatment of TB?
Definition
prophylactic, preventive measures, vaccine (if have active, doesn't cure u)
- If tested positive- CXR, also can be treated with vitamin B6. (page 281 in box)

What is important to note about SARS?
Definition
severe acute respiratory syndrome
- By 2004 no outbreaks
- Not totally eradicated, still watching for it, no new cases
- Virus
- Severe acute respiratory syndrome
- Transmitted through fluids: respiratory, feces, salvia
- NI: standard and droplet precautions
- Mortality rate high
- S&S: respiratory, viral symptoms

What is avian influenza?
Definition
- Very deadly
- Watch contact with feathers
- Flu-like: Cough, diarrhea, trouble breathing, fever,, HA, muscle aches, running nose
- TX & prevention: avoid sick or dead infected poultry
- Antiviral drugs: oseltanivir and zanamivir
- Vaccine available
- NI: contact, airborne, and eye-protection

Definition
- Through mosquitos biting infected birds and then biting you
- No meds to treat
- No vaccines to prevent
- Most infected will have no symptoms
- Blood tests determine if you have it
- Transmittable through mother to baby
- NI: not person to person, manage symptoms, standard precautions

What is lyme disease?
Definition
- Bacterial
- Most common reported vector disease. Tick infected for life
- Chart in book explaining when you get it and why
- Swollen lymph nodes, bulls-eye rash, chills, fever, muscle and joint aches
- Untreated- can attack other organs, bell’s palsy
- Tx: antibiotics (oral or IV)
- SE of TX: low WBC, diarrhea, muscle ache, fatigue
- Nursing considerations: adequate rest, anti-fever, anti-swelling, help with ROM but don't exhausted, protect from sensory overload, monitor VS (temp)
