Pharisees- Well educated religious leaders.

 

Sadducees- Small group of wealthy and powerful chief priests and elders/members of the high court of israel, believed in strict interpretation of the Torah/managed temple.

 

Scribes- Scholars who interpeted and taught the Law/associated with P's and S's. Responsible for writing and keeping records as many people were illeterate.

 

Essenes(not mentioned by name in the Bible)- Monastic group that htought Jews had become too lax in following God/Torah and withdrew to the desert.

 

Zealots- Militant roup for Jewish independence/thought compliance wit hRome was blasphemous/Disliked by many other groups for the violence they brought on especiall the destruction of the Temple that basically only the Pharisees survived.

 

Great Majority Poor majority of the Jewish population most linked with Jesus' ministry.

Letters- Messages addressed to early Christians by the Apostles and their followers. ex: The letters of Pau

 

Apocalyptic LIterature- Describes the destruction of evil and the coming of God's reign. Ex: Book of Revelation

 

Psalms and canticles- Poems and prayers once sung. ex: Psalms
