Because there is too much material surrounding it and it's black as the name suggests.

When a very large mass star explodes, the mass condenses and collapses pulling in any material surrounding it.

The boundy of the black hole. Once the matter has entered the event horizon cannot get out again; not even light.

Definition
Evidence comes from binary stars which get drawn into the black hole forming an accretion disc of matter circling the area. It orbits so fast that it is hot enough to give of XRays.
