Term
Regulation of Blood Pressure (7)
Definition
cardiac output and peripheral vascular resistance
arterioles and venules-autoregulation
ANS
heart rate and stroke volume
fluid volume
neurohormonal mediators
renin/angiotensin/aldosterone
Term
Classification of Hypertension (SBP, DBP, and recommended follow up)
Definition
--Normal = SBP <120 DBP <80; check in 2 yrs
-- prehypertension = SBP 120-139 DBP 80-89; check in 1 yr
-- hypertension (stage 1) SBP 140-159 DBP 90-99; eval 1 wk
-- HT (stage 2) = SBP >160 DBP >100; eval immediately
Term
Hypertension (S&S- 6)
Definition
may be asymptomatic
headache is common
dizziness
N&V
visual disturbances
renal insufficiency
Term
Orthostatic Hypotension
Definition
-dizziness or hypotension with change in posture
- usually caused by volume depletion
- could be caused my autonomic insufficiency
Term
Differential Diagnosis of HT
Definition
- Primary (95%)
caused by increased peripheral resistance
results from vasoconstriction or narrowed peripheral blood vessels
increased workload and more and more pressure: afterload

- Secondary
multiple system involvement with direct or indirect effect on renal system
aldosterone, cortisol, and catecholamines in excess
chronic stress→ prolonged excess of catecholamines
Term
Risk Factors for HT
Definition
Non-modifiable: Family history, Age, Ethnicity, Gender

Modifiable: Stress, food choices, obesity, alcohol dependence, smoking, caffeine consumption
