Levator Scapulae
Shrugging the shoulders (scapula elevation) requires the use of levator scapulae and Trapezius. Fixation of the scapula by other muscles, allows the levator scapulae muscles to work together to aid cervical extension, or independently to laterally flex (side bend) the neck towards the side of the working muscle.
Origin
- Transverse processes of C1-4
Insertion
- Medial border of the scapula above the level of the scapula spine
Actions
- Scapula elevation
- Lateral flexion of the cervical spine (each side independently)
- Extension of the cervical spine (each side independently)

Occipitofrontalis
The occipitofrontalis or epicranius is a muscle which covers parts of the skull. It consists of two parts or bellies: The occipital belly, near the occipital bone, and the frontal belly, near the frontal bone.
Origin: 2 occipital bellies and 2 frontal bellies.
Insertion: Galea aponeurotica
Actions: Raises eyebrows, wrinkles forehead |

Splenius
Splenius is often divided into two muscles, splenius capitus (those fibres which insert on the skull) and splenius cervicis (those that insert onto the cervical transverse processes of the spine).
Origin
- Lower half of the ligamentum nuchae
- Spinous processes of C7-T5
Insertion
- Transverse processes of C3-7
- Base of the skull
Actions
- Extension of the head and neck
- Contraction of one side laterally flexes and rotates the neck to the same side
Daily uses
- Looking up at the ceiling
- Looking over your shoulder

Sternocleidomastoid
Sternocleidomastoid can clearly be seen when you turn your head to one side, on the opposite side of the neck.
Origin
- Anterior surface of the upper sternum
- Inner part of the clavicle
Insertion
- Mastoid process (behind the ear)
Actions
- Contraction on both sides: Flexes the neck
- Contraction on one side only: Laterally flexes (side bends) to the same side and rotates
to the other side
Daily uses
- Looking at the floor
- Looking over your shoulder
- Holding the phone between your ear and shoulder
