Definition

A molecule that has electically charged areas is called a polar molecule.

the combined forces of attraction among water molecules of surrounding materials is called capillary action.

surface tension is the tightness across the surface of water that is caused by the polar molecules that are pulling on one another.

solution is the mixture that forms when one substance dissolves another.

the substance that does the dissolving is called the solvent.

specific heat is the amount of heat need to increase the temperature of a certain mass of a substance by 1 degree celcius.

Evaporation is the process by which molecules at the surface of a liquid absorb enough energy to change to the gaseous state.

the process by which a gas changes to liquid is called condensation.

photosynthesis is the process by which plants use water along with carbon dioxide and energy from the sun to make there own food.

a habitat is the place where it lives and obtains all living things it needs to survive.

water that fills the cracks and spaces in underground soil and rock layers is called the groundwater.

water cycle is the continuous process by which water moves from earths surface to the atmosphere and back.

the water given off through the leaves as water vapor in a process called transpiration.

the water that falls to earth as rain snow hail or sleet is called precipitation.

the streams and smaller rivers that feed into a main river are called tributaries.

the land area that supplies water to a river system is called a watershed.

one watershed is seperated from another by a ridge of land called a divide.

a lake that stores water for humans is called a resevoir.

nutrients are substances such as nitrogen phosphores that enable plants and algae to grow.

the nurtrients build up over time is called eutrophication.

A wetland is a land area that is covered with a shallow layer of water during some or all of the year.

materials such as sand abd gravel allow water to pass through or premeate. they are thus known as permeable.

clay and granite are impermeable meaning that the water cannot past through easily.

the area of permeable rock or soil that is totally filled or saturated with water is called a saturated zone.

the top of the saturated zone is the water table.

therefore the layer of rock and soil above the water the water table is called the unsaturated zone.

any unerground layer of permeable or sediment that holds water is called the aquifer.

artesian well water rises because of the pressure within in aquifer.

Definition

irrigation is the process of supplying water to areas of land to make them suitable for growning crops.

conservation is the practice of using less of a rescource so that it will not be used up.

one meethod of obtaining freshwater from salt water is called desalination.

water quality is a measurment the substance in water besides water molecules.

a concentration is the amount of one substance in a certain volume of another substance.

the combines level of two minerals calcium and magnesium in a sample of water is reffered to as the hardness.

filteration is the process of passing water through a series of screens that allows the water through but not larger solid particals.

other particaes stick to the flock a process called the coagulation.

different kinds of wastes that are in it is called the sewege.
