Term

Bugs that are superantigens

Definition
S aureus: TSST-1 causes TSS 9fever, rash, shock) enterotoxins cause food poisoning

S. pyogenes: scarlet fever-erythrogenic toxin causes toxic shock-like syndrome
Term
Bugs with ADP-ribosylating  AB toxins
Definition
Cornybacterium diptheriae: inactivated elongation factor (EF-2, similar to psuedomonas exotoxin A); causes pharyngitis and pseudomembrane in throat.

Vibrio cholerae: ADP ribosylation of G protein stimulates AC increases pumping of Cl and water into gut; voluminous rice water diarrhea

E coli: heat-labile toxin stimulates AC (cholera-like mechanism) causing watery diarrhea. Heat-stable toxin stimulates GC "labile like the air, stable like the ground"

Bordetella pertussis: stimulates AC; whooping cough; inhibits chemokine receptor causing lymphocytosis
Term
Toxins produced by:

clostridium perfringens:
Clostridium tetani
Clostridium botulinum:
Bacillus anthracis
shigella:
Strep pyrogenes
Definition
clostridium perfringens: alpha toxin causes gas gangrene; get double does of hemolysis on blood agar
Clostridium tetani: blocks the release of inbibitory NT glycine causes lockjaw
Clostridium botulinum: blocks the release of Ach; causes anticholinergic Sx, CNS paralysis esp cranial nerves; spores in canned food, honey
Bacillus anthracis:  AC-like toxin
shigella: shiga toxin (also produced by e coli O157:H7), cleaves host cell rRNA; enhances cytokine release causes HUS
Strep pyrogenes: streptolysin O is a hemolysin; antigen for ASO Ab in rheumatic fever
