Term
Transmission Control Protocol/Internet
Protocol (TCP/IP)
Definition
Most common protocol suite used for local area
networks and the Internet
Term
IP
Definition
Protocol that functions primarily at Open Systems
Interconnection (OSI) Network Layer (Layer 3)
Term
TCP
Definition
Transport Layer (Layer 4) protocol
Term
ICMP
Definition
Used to relay query messages
Term
Attacks that use ICMP
Definition
Network discovery

Smurf
DoS
attack

ICMP
redirect attack

Ping of death
Term
SNMP
Simple Network Management Protocol
Definition
Agents are password protected

Password is known as community string
Term
DNS
Definition
Database with name of each site and
corresponding IP number
Term
DNS poisoning
Definition
substitutes fraudulent IP address

Can be done in local host table or external DNS server

Latest edition of DNS software prevents DNS poisoning

Zone transfer allows attacker access to network,
hardware, and operating system information

BIND
Term
Secure router configuration
Definition
Router operates at Network Layer (Layer 3)

Forwards packets across computer networks
Term
IP Telephony
Definition
Converges voice and data traffic over single IP
network

IP telephony adds digital voice clients and new
voice applications to a data based network
Term
network Discovery
Definition
An attacker can use ICMP messages as one of the first steps in reconnaissance to discover information about the hosts that are part of the network. This can include sending individual ICMP echo request to the broadcast addresses of a network and sending an ICMP address mask request to a host on the network to determine the subnet mask
Term
Smurf DOS Attack
Definition
Broadcast a ping request (which uses ICMP) to all computers on the network but chnage the address from which the request came to that target. This makes it appear that the target computer is asking for a response from all computers. Each of the computers then responds to the target server, overwhelming it and causing it to crash or be unavailable to legitimate users
Term
ICMP redirect attack
Definition
redirect packet iss ent tot he victim that asks the host to send its packets to another router which is usually a malicious device
Term
Ping of death
Definition
A malformed ping using ICMP is sent to the victims computer that exceeds the size of an IP packet, this causes the host to crash
Term
BIND
Definition
Berkeley Internet Name Domain
Term
ICMP
Definition
