§  Marat was a close friend of David who was a writer for a radical newspaper

§  Marat developed a skin condition from hiding in the sewers so he did much of his writing in the bath

§  He was responsible for the deaths of hundreds at the guillotine

§  He was murdered by a lady who thought he was getting carried away charlotte corde

§  His face looks very calm and peaceful

§  There is a very strong horizontal line that means tranquility and calmness

§  He is still holding the quill which represents that the movement will still go forward and that charlotte corde did not accomplish what she thought she did.

§  The quill is by the sword which represents that the pen is mightier than the sword

§  White cloth and the blood represent martyrdom in innocence

§  He looks defenseless

§  He has painted him like Christ, the ultimate martyr

§  Talks about French occupation of Spain. Napoleon bought the Spanish crown and put his brother in place. Spanish revolt in Madrid. Citizens of Madrid are being executed for their crime.

§  French soldiers don’t show faces which dehumanizes them

§  The man looks like Christ and has a weird indentation in his hand that looks like a nail print.
