Cubism
Definition
- One of the most influential visual art styles of the 20th century, created by Pablo Picasso and George Braque
- Rejected the inherited concept that art should copy nature or that it should adobe traditional techniques of perspective, modeling, or foreshadowing
- emphasized the 2D of the canvas
- Reduced and fractured objects into geometric forms
- not only an innovative style that sparked new ways of thinking, but new ways of thinking about the purpose of art: What happens when the subject matter of the is not the still life or the portrait, but rather an analysis of the very language of the painting?
Term
Analytic Cubism
Definition
- In Analytical Cubism, Picasso and Braque abstracted their works to such a degree that there were reduced to a series of overlapping planes and facets, mostly in near monochromatic browns, grays, or blacks.
- By removing the "problem" of color, they could focus on structure, line, and space.
- Their favorite subjects were still lifes with musical instruments, bottles, pitchers, glasses, newspapers, playing cards, and the human face and figure.
