Term

Optimal Arousal Theory

(Motivation)

Definition

need a certain amount of phsical arousal to produce motivation which leads to behavior

-too much physical arousal = panic attack

-optimal level of arousal motivates us to behave

-Yerke's Dodson Law

-moderate level of arousal=optimal performance

Term
Maslow's Hierarchy
Definition

-needs go from most basic physiological to highest psychological

-everyone tries to be the best 'me' they can be=self actualization

1.)biological needs

2.)safety needs

3.)love and belongingness-friendship strong motivation

4.)esteem needs (feel good about yourself)

5.) self actualization

Term

Evolution Theory (fight/flight)

Motivation

Definition

-sympathetic and parasympathetic systems

-fear that makes us fight or flight

-doesn't explain behavior when not scared/emergency

-major motives all involve basic survival/reproduction needs

-do things if they feel good, and stop if they feel bad

Term

Drive Reduciton Model/Theory

(Motivation)

Definition

-drive=uncomfortable state of being

-drives motivate us to reduce that state

-behavior is determined by needs/drives

-incentives are different; things outsideof our body

-drives are biological; acheive homeostasis

-key question: are you trying to maintain homeostasis? determine between drive and incentive

Term

I eat breakfast beause i am hungry.

Incentive or Drive?

Definition
Drive because it is a biological need being met
Term
I go to Eng 302 to get participation points and pass the class to get my B.A. degree
Definition
incentive because getting my degree and being in class are not biological needs to maintain homeostasis
Term
Four F's of Motivation
Definition

-Fight; Flee; feeding; fornicating

- comes from the biological motivation theory

Term
Biology of Hunger
Definition

-stomach - growing/pain

-blood-glucose levels drop or raise

-brain- hypothalamus monitors glucose levels and regulates hormones (direct connection to the petuitary gland)

-Hormones: appetite stimulus; neuropeptidey Y, Orexin, ghrelin, melanin

Appetite Supressents: insulin, leptin CCK

Term
Insuliln
Definition

-appetite suppressent

-breaks down glucose and is related to diabetes

Term
Psychology of food and Hunger
Definition

why do we eat what we eat?

EXTERNAL FACTORs:

-smell of food can override biological needs

-culture

-environment; children grow up with high level of conflict are more likely to have an eating disorder

-BODY WEIGHT

-incentive for fitness

-increase in obesity

Term
Biology of Sexual Behavior
Definition

Hypothalamus: lesichs (damage) back of the hypothalamus lead to decresed sex drive

-electrical stimulation lead to increased sex drive

-orgasm: deactivation of the amygdaela and hippocampus and part of the ocrtex (amygdaela involves fear)

-Testosterone: related to sex drive

men with ^^ test=^^ sex drive than other males

Women with " " (not cross-gender related)

Term
Social Influences of Sexual Behavior
Definition

cultural views:

-restrictive: forma, legal consequences for sex out of marriage

-Semi-restrictive: no FORMAL prohibition, but socially unacceptable

-Permissive: no formal or informal consequences

Term
Gender and Casual sex
Definition

Study: attractive male and attractive female as researchers

3 questions/options

1.) go out on date 2.) back to apt. 3.) sex

-Male response 1/2 yes to1, 3/4 yes to 2, almost all yes to 3

-Female response almost exact opposite..but why?

-females=^invested in pregnancy; fear for safety

-all based on heterosexual relationships

Term
Sexual Orientation
Definition

-Kinsey Scale; not a category it is a continuum

like a line graph from 0(totally hetero) to 3(bisexual) to 6(totally homosexual)

affected by nature and nurture
