Definition
a. Discrete period in which there is the sudden onset of intense apprehension, fearfulness, or terror, often associated with feelings of impending doom.
b. During these attacks, symptoms such as shortness of breath, palpitations, chest pain or discomfort, chocking or smothering sensations, and fear of “going crazy” or losing control are present

Obsessions: persistent ideas, thoughts, impulses or images that are experienced as intrusive and inappropriate and cause marked anxiety or distress.

Post traumatic Stress Disorder
Definition
a. The reexperiencing of an extremely traumatic event accompanied by symptoms of increased arousal and by avoidance of stimuli associated with the trauma
b. Person was exposed to a traumatic event
c. Duration of symptoms is greater than 1 month

• Acute: if duration of symptoms is less than 3 months
• Chronic: if duration of symptoms is 3 months or more
• With delayed onset: if onset of symptoms is at least 6 months after the stressor

Acute Stress Disorder
Definition
a. Symptoms similar to those of PTSD that occur immediately in the aftermath of an extremely traumatic event
b. Disturbance lasts for a minimum of two days and a maximum of 4 weeks
c. Must have 3 or more dissociative symptoms
d. Derealization- when the world around you feels unreal or unfamiliar
e. Depersonalization- spectator of your own life, dethatched from your own experience with your body- watching you life like it is a movie
f. Dissociative amnesia- inability to recall important personal information - Cannot be explained by ordinary forgetfulness

Definition
a. At least 6 months of persistent and excessive anxiety and worry
b. Person finds it difficult to control the worry

Anxiety Disorder Due to General Medical Conditions
Definition
a. Anxiety judged to be a direct physiological consequence of a general medical condition
b. Prominent anxiety, Panic Attacks, or obsessions or compulsions predominate in the clinical picture
• With generalized anxiety
• With panic attacks
• With OCD

Adjustment Disorder
Definition
i. Emotional or behavioral symptoms in response to an identifiable stressor occurring within 3 months of the onset of the stressor
ii. Clinically significant by either: Marked distress that is in excess of what would be expected from exposure the stressor OR Significant impairment in social or occupational (academic) functioning
iii. Once the stressor is removed, the symptoms do not persist for more than an additional 6 months.

Specify: With Depressed Mood, With Anxiety, With Mixed Anxiety and Depressed Mood, With disturbance of Conduct, With Mixed Disturbance of Emotions and Conduct, Unspecified

i. Acute: less than 6 months
