Term

properties of fungi:

yeast

Definition

large oval cells that divide by budding, may show as pseudohyphae, but they are not really hyphae

candida

Term

properties of fungi:

hyphae

Definition

found in molds (i.e. aspergillus) these are long filamentous structures which are hollow and multinucleated, or septate

masses of this without branching would be called mycelia

Term

properties of fungi:

conidia

Definition

the spores hyphae produce above the surface, the size and shape of which are used to speciate bacteria

asexual reproductive elements

Term
morphology differences of histoplasma capsulatum?
Definition

has a yeast like morphology in the human body and a hyphae morphology at room temperature

this is refered to as dimorphism

Term
components of a fungal cells wall and membrane
Definition

wall has chitin and glucan

the membrane has sterols zymosterol and ergosterol (like our cholesterol)

ØEchinocandins block the sunthesis of glucan and include: Caspofungin, Micafungin, Anidulafungin
Term
difference between endo and ectothrix?
Definition

endothrix are often trichophytons and invade the interior of the hair shaft

ectothrix grow inside hair shaft, but produce an external sheath of spores

Term
difference between saprolytic phase and parasitic phase of a systemic mycoses?
Definition

in coccidioides immitis, for instance, the saprolytic phase is when the spores (arthroconidia) are living on dead things and are capable of infecting

once the spores are inhales, the parasitic phase is when the spherules grow and contain endospores, which eventually burst and cause the formation of more spherules in a cycle

Term
cutaneous manifestions of coccidomycosis
Definition
1. Toxic erythema consisting of a maculopapular rash.
2. Erythema nodosum (typically over the lower extremities).
3. Erythema multiforme (usually in a necklace distribution).
