The Sassanid and byzantine empires had fought over land for almost 200 yrs - this had drained them of financial and military resources - they also taxed the people heavily - the empires combined many ethnic groups and tribes with little in common so they were open to change - the Muslims appearing as liberaors and they lowered their taxes.
