Term
Cutaneous senses
Definition
-Sensitivity to stimuli that involve the skin (touch)
-Stimuli= Pressure, Vibration, Heating and cooling, tissue damage
Term
Kinesthesia
Definition
-Perception of the body's own movements
-Stimuli= Stretch receptors in skeletal muscle, used to control movement
Term
Organic
Definition
-Sense in the inner organs of the body
-Respond to stretch and sometimes temperature
Term
Somatosenses
Definition
- Touch, temperature, and pain
Term
Touch
Definition
Sensitivity to pressure and vibration
Term
Temperature
Definition
- 2 thermal receptors
-Warm receptors and cold receptors
Term
Pain
Definition
-High threshold mechanoreceptors- respond to intense pressure( striking, stretching, pinching)
-Responds ti extremes in heat, acids and capsaicin
-Sensitive to ATP
Term
Cutaneous Receptors
Definition
-Ruffini corpuscles
-Pacinian corpuscles
-Meissner's corpuscles
-Merkel's Disks
Term
Ruffini corpuscles
Definition
- Respond to indentation of the skin
Term
Pacinian corpuscles
Definition
- Detect mechanical stimulation and rapid vibrations
Term
Meissner's corpuscles
Definition
-Detect low frequency vibrations
Term
Merkel's disks
Definition
Respond to indentation of the skin
Term
Somatosensory pathway
Definition
-Axons from somatosensory receptors enter the CNS via spinal nerves
-Enter and ascend in the spinal cord in the dorsal columns to nuclei in the medulla
-Axons cross and ascend through the medial lemniscus to the ventral posterior nucleus (VPN) of the thalamus
-VPN projects to the primary somatosensory cortex
Term
Skeletal muscle
Definition
-Muscles connected to bones at each end
-Flexion: movement that tends to bend joints
-Extension: movement that tends to straighten joints
Term
Extrafusal muscle fiber
Definition
-Responsible for muscle contraction
-innervated by alpha motor neurons
-Single alpha motor neuron can innervate several muscle fibers
Term
Intrafusal muscle fiber
Definition
-Specialized sensory organs
-Arranged in parallel to extrafusal muscle fibers in order to detect muscle length
-Gamma motor neuron contracts the intrafusal muscle fiber ( modifies the sensitivity of the fibers ending to stretch)
Term
Motor unit
Definition
-Alpha motor neuron, axon, and the associated extrafusal muscle fibers
