A very arrogant man. He made a report that made the gold report seem like a great discovery. Greedy gold-seekers rushed to South Dakota, the location of part of the Sioux Reservation. He knew that a victory against the Sioux would launch him into the presidency.

(1876-1877) Gold was found in the black hills of South Dakota. Custer sends a report stating the discovery. Leader of sioux-Red Cloud-agreed to make a treaty, but Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse did not agree. They break away, and an army is dispatched. Custer is told to subdue this radical bands. He splits up in his group to find them, but doesn't wait for reinforcements. Indians kill 200/240

Indians in Idaho. Gold rush in 1877. The Indians, led by Chief Joseph, begin a 1,500 mile hike to canadian border. They get w/in 30 miles, and are moved to a reservation.

Definition
The Apache were fierce tribes of Arizona and New Mexico that were difficult to subdue. They were led by Geronimo, and pursued into Mexico; however, they left their women and children behind, and they were captured. The men surrender and are moved into Ok. as farmers.

Definition
(1823-1909). Leader of the Apaches, who had a distinct hatred for whites. He led the Apache men into Mexico, where they were forced to surrender. He repeatedly fled the Okla. reservation and sought freedom in Mexico, and finally surrendered to authorities in 1886. Would "never be killed by bullets", and died of old age.

Nez Percé indian who led his 700 breakaway Indians on a 1700 mile, 3 month hike to the Canadian border where he hoped to meet with Sitting Bull. He surrendered and was betrayed, believing they were being taken back to their ancestoral lands, when they were actually being taken to a reservation in Kansas.

Sioux warrier who broke away from the more peaceful portion of the Sioux indians with Crazy horse. He did not agree that they should initiate a treaty with the American government. He took refuge North of the border after the Battle of Little Longhorn.

Battle where the US army stamped out the "Ghost Dance" cult in 1890. 200 Indian men, women and children were killed, as well as 29 invading soldiers.

1887. The act dissolved many of the tribes as legal entities, wiped out tribal ownership of land, and set up individual Indian family heads with 160 free acres. They could gain citizenship in 25 years.

This was spurred by the Transcontinental RR, because w/o it there was no way of shipping beef. It was an idea inspired by Joseph McCoy. Cattle would be driven to the railhead, a railroad shipping station. This was dangerous because of the possibility of a stampede.

Homestead Act of 1862
Definition
Allowed a settler to acquire 160 acres of land by living on it for 5 years and improving it, only paying a nominal fee of $30. About ½mil families took advantage of this Act. Many were forced to give up their land due to drought.

Definition
Commander of eighty-one soldiers and civilians. In 1866, he and his troops were ambushed by a Sioux war party blocking construction on the Bozeman trail to the Montana goldfields. The Sioux completely mutilated the group, not leaving a single survivor.

Oklahoma was the last great land rush in the US, when the fed. gov made the plains formerly occupied by the Indians available to settlers. Overeager "sooners" illegally crossed the border, claiming their land before the official date. April 22, 1889, 50,000 "boomers" were ready at the boundary line to stake their claim, finding much of the land already claimed. By the end of the year, Okla. had 60,000 residents

Definition
founded in Texas in the late 1870s. Farmers joined alliance to create cooperative buying to break the influence of the Railroads. This org. weakened themselves by ignoring tenant farmers, sharecroppers, farmworkers, and blacks (who counted for nearly ½ of the farmer population) By 1890s millions involved, which feeds into politics, and the development of the "people's party"

the "people's party". The wanted free and unlimited coinage of silver, a graduated income tax, gov. ownership of telephone, telegraphs, and the RR, direct election of US Senators, one term limit to the presidency, use of initiative and referendum votes, a shorter work day of 8 hours, and immigrant restriction. In 1892 election, pop. Candidate, James B. Weaver, won 22 electoral votes from 6 midwestern states.

Definition
Wanted inflation, as did the Greenbacks, and to improve labor. In 1878, they captured 14 seats in congress. In 1880, their candidate was James B. Weaver, who collected only 3% of the popular vote.

Granger Laws
Definition
A series of laws passed in western states to regulate grain elevator and railroad freight rates and rebates and to address long- and short-haul discrimination and other railroad abuses against farmers. When several Granger laws were declared unconstitutional by the Supreme Court, the federal Interstate Commerce Act of 1887 was passed to secure the same reforms. The Granger laws were so called because they were passed in response to the Grange movement.

Definition
Colorado's man-eater. He lead miners up to mountains. They get snowed in, so he develops a plan to eat all of them. He kills them, and comes back down the next spring much richer. He was charged with murder and cannibalism. He escapes jail, is found, and receives a life imprisonment but eventually is pardoned.
