What are the different classes of burns?
Definition
- 1st - epidermis, never blisters. Do not use antiseptic
- 2nd - into dermis, takes 3-6 weeks to heal
- 3rd - dry, waxy, usually not painful. Needs grafting to heal.

- Rule on nines - an area on an adult is worth 9%
- Lund Bower diagram - for kids

What burns should not be self treated?
Definition
- Larger than 3 inches
- Multiple burns
- High risk of infection
- Hands, feet, face, groin, butt, major joint.
**Refer large burns, inhalation, diabetics, pregnant, extreme ages

Definition
- CANNOT use Silvadene, sulfamylon cream
- Some carbonic anhydrase inhibitors
- Celebrex
- Most Thiazides
- Sulfasalazine
- Zonisamide

What is used for treatment of minor burns?
Definition
- Telfa pads - primary
- Coban - self adhering wrap
- Bactine - has lidocaine, limit use
- Cool water, not ice

What is immediate care of minor burns?
Definition
- Cool the burn - 10 to 20 min, within 20 min of injury. Running cool water, immersion
- Clean with soap and water
- Pain relief - nsaids or tylenol

What are local anesthetics for burn pain relief?
Definition
- Benzocaine 5-20% or tetracaine 1-2%
- Lidocaine 0.5-4%
- Pramoxine 1% - Caladryl clear
**Hydrocortisone not FDA approved, but can use lower str for burns

- NSAIDs - good for sunburn
