Term
formula for cellular respiration
Definition
C6H12O6 (food) + 6O2 (air) -(mitochondrion)-> 6H2O (byproduct) ) + 6CO2 (exhale) + 38ATP (YAY!)

organic compounds->glycolysis->pyretic acid (+ATP) ->aerobic respiration->CO2 + H2O (+ATP)
Term
Glycolysis
Definition
breakdown of glucose, occurs in cytosol (does not require oxygen but it can be either aerobic or anaerobic)
1) glucose, 6 carbon compound
2) 2ATPs inserted, go through a series of intermediates
3) get 4 ATP, net gain of 2 ATP and 2 NADH
4) out you get 2 3 carbons of pyretic acid
5) get 2 CO2 released and 2 NADH
6) Acetyl Co A (2C)
Term
Fermentation
Definition
anaerobic respiration, occurs in the cytosol

organic compounds->glycolysis->pyretic acid (+ATP)->anaerobic pathways (Lactic acid or alcoholic)->lactic acid, ethyl alcohol, or others
Term
2 types of fermentation
Definition
lactic acid and alcoholic
Term
lactic acid fermentation
Definition
1) glucose (6C)
2) glycolysis
3) 2 pyruvic acids from that
4) get 2 lactic acids, 2 NAD+, 2ATP
Term
alcoholic fermentation
Definition
1) glucose (6C)
2) glycolysis
3) 2 Pyruvic acids from that
4) get 2 ethyl alcohols, CO2, 2NAD+, 2ATP
Term
lactic acid purpose
Definition
cheese, dairy
Term
alcoholic fermentation purpose
Definition
liquor industry use ethyl alcohol
baking industry use carbon dioxide (yeast)
Term
Kreb's Cycle
Definition
aerobic respiration, other pathway. occurs in matrix of mitochondrion
1)pyruvic cid to acetol CoA, get 2 NADH (glycolisis)
2) combines with 2 4 carbon compounds to get citric acid (6 carbon compound) yield 6 NADH and 2 FADH
3)accepted by a 5 carbon compound
net gain: 8 NADH, 2 FaDH, 2ATP, 6CO2
Term
Electron transport train
Definition
aerobic occurs in cristae of mitochondrion
NADH and FADH donate their electrons to the ETC (oxygen is the final electron acceptor)
molecules release H+ protons, crewing an H+ proton gradient then move through the ATP synthase creating ATP through chemiosomosis
for every 1 NADH 3 ATPs are produced, for every 1 FADH, 2 ATPs produced, therefor 10 NADH --> 30 ATPs, 2 FADH--> 4 ATPs
Term
Total yield of ATP
Definition
2 ATP from glycolysis, 2 ATP cellular respiration (kreb's cycle), 34 ATP from electron transport chain = 38 ATP
