Term
21. What gives a protein is 3D shape?
Definition
The twisting and bonding of a polypeptide chain of amino acids
Term
22. What are the 2 primary nucleic acids?
Definition
DNA-deoxyribonucleic acid
RNA-ribonucleic acid
Term
23. Describe DNA
Definition
double spiral or helix attached at regular intervals. The ladder sides are made of phosphate and sugar. The sugar attaches to a base of guanine adenine, cytosine or thymine. The rungs in the ladder are formed when C attaches to G, or A attaches to T
Term
24. Know the difference between prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells.
Definition
Prokaryotic cells: A cell that lacks a nuclear membrane and has only indistinct organelles; found only in kingdom Monera.
Eukaryotic cells: Cells that possess both organelles and a nucleus that is surrounded by a nuclear membrane.
Term
25. What conditions are necessary for active transport across a membrane?
Definition
Requires Cellular energy
Term
26. Know what part of the atom is responsible for its chemical behavior.
Definition
The valence electrons
Term
27. Know all the cell functions.
Definition
Nutrition: Absorption, Digestion
Internal Functions: Synthesis, Respiration, Movement, Irritability
Releasing Materials: Excretion, Egestion, Secretion
Continuing Existence: Homeostasis, Reproduction
Term
28. Know phases of mitosis and meiosis.
Definition
Mitosis: Interphase, Prophase, Metaphase, Anaphase, Telophase, Interphase
Meiosis: First division: Prophase, Metaphase, anaphase, Telophase. Second division: metaphase, anaphase, telophase, gametes
Term
29. Know what start codons, stop codons, anticodons, Coding for amino acids, ect. are.
Definition
Start codons: AUG codes for methionine, which can bond on one side
Stop codons: UAA, UAG, UGA do not correspond to any amino acids.
Anticodons: The triplet of nucleotides on transfer RNA that will pair with the codon of the messenger RNA to line up amino acids during protein synthesis.
Term
30. Know about Gene mutations.
Definition
A changing in the gene itself, which alters the sequence of nucleotide bases within a gene.
Term
31. Know how organisms’ obtain their energy:
• Autotrophs
• Heterotrophs
• Photosynthesis
• Cellular respiration (aerobic and anaerobic)
• ATP and how many are yielded in the above
Definition
Autotrophs: obtain energy through photosynthesis
Heterotrophs: depends upon other organisms for food.
Photosynthesis: The process whereby simple sugars are formed from carbon dioxide and water in the presence of light and chlorophyll.
Aerobic cellular respiration: The oxygen requiring process of breaking down a food substance to obtain cellular energy.
Anaerobic cellular respiration: The process of breaking down a food substance to obtain cellular energy, does not require oxygen.
Term
32. Know the formulas for photosynthesis and aerobic cellular respiration.
Definition
Photosynthesis: H2O + CO2 + light energy with chlorophyll gives C6H12O6 + O2
Cellular respiration: C6H12O6 + O2 gives H2O = CO2 + ATP (energy)
Term
33. How can you tell the sex of a person by looking at chromosomes?
Definition
Males have an X and Y sex chromosomes
Females have and X and X sex chromosomes
Term
34. Know how to do a monohybrid cross.
Definition
Aa crossed with Aa get
1 AA, 2 Aa, and 1aa
Term
35. Know about Incomplete Dominance and how you would perform a Punnet square for incomplete dominance.
Definition
Incomplete dominance: The type of inheritance in which the alleles for expressing characteristics are neither dominant nor recessive.
RR crossed with rr get 4 Rr
Term
36. Why is theistic evolution not acceptable to Bible-believing Christians?
Definition
Thesistic evolution says that Classical religious teachings about God are compatible with modern scientific understanding about biological evolution. Evolution is a tool that God employed to develop human life. Scriptural creation stories are interpreted as being allegorical
Term
37. Describe the long-day theory:
Definition
God's days are not the same as our days
Term
38. Describe the short-day theory:
Definition
The creation days occurred as a 24 hour day
Term
39. Describe the gap theory:
Definition
There are extreme breaks between verses in Genesis
Term
40. Describe the concept of a Common Ancestor:
Definition
A hypothetical organism that gave rise to two or more types of organisms.
