Term
Huntington's disease
Definition
You dont see it tell you are 35
Disease of the nerve system
Dominant
Term
Anchodroplasia
Definition
Dwarfism
Dominant allele AA or Aa but not aa
Term
Sickle cell Anemia
Definition
Recessive aa
The sickling occurs because of a mutation in the haemoglobin gene
Term
Cystic Fibrosis
Definition
Recessive
Membrain proteins defective CL- rise outside the cell
Term
Fathers to Daughters or Mothers to daughters
Definition
Fathers to Daughters
Term
Tay Sachs
Definition
Brain cells
Enzymes can't break down lipids/fats
Recessive alleles
Term
Polydactyly
Definition
Extra toes and fingers
dominant trait
Autosomal
Term
Medals first law of segregation
Definition
The seeds of a garden pea may be round or wrinkled. Round shape is determined by a gene R, and wrinkled shape by r. When Mendel crossed F1 plants (Rr) he found that, although all the parents had round seeds, about one-quarter of their offspring had wrinkled seeds.

After much experimenting over a number of generations, Mendel came to the conclusion that we call his first law, or the law of segregation. He suggested that the offspring could be RR, Rr, or rr, and that each form occurred in a statistically predictable proportion.
Term
Genetic Testing
Definition
Genetic testing allows the genetic diagnosis of vulnerabilities to inherited diseases, and can also be used to determine a child's paternity (genetic father) or a person's ancestry.
Term
Distinguish between parental and recombinant gametes.
Definition
Parental gametes are gametes that share the same genotype as the parent. Recombinant gametes do not as a result of chromsomal crossover during meiosis.
Term
How is sex determined in birds?
Definition
In birds, sex is determined by a ZW chromosome scheme. Males are ZZ and females are ZW
Term
How is sex determined in bees.
Definition
There are not sex chromosomes in bees. Females develop from fertilized eggs and thus are diploid. Males develop from unfertilized eggs and thus are haploid they have no fathers.
Term
How is sex determined in crickets
Definition
Females are XX and males are XO. Having only one X chromosome.
Term
Explain why sex-linked diseases are more common in human males.?
Definition
sex-linked genes are genes that are carried (located) on the X chromosome.
EX: baldness, colorblindness
the alleles for these are carried on the X chromosome which is y men more frequently have these illnesses than women b/c they only receive 1 X chromosome and if that X carries the defective allele then ...dum dum dum...where as women would have to have the defective allele on both their X chromosomes to have the illness
Term
Know what lethal alleles are
Definition
Alleles that cause an organism to die only when present in homozygous condition are called lethal alleles. The gene involved is considered an essential gene.
Term
Turner syndrome ---Sex linked disorder and chromosomal abnormality
Definition
occurs when females inherit only one X chromosome--their genotype is X0 (i.e., monosomy X). If they survive to birth, these girls have abnormal growth patterns. They are short in stature, averaging 4 foot 7 inches as adults, and often have distinctive webbed necks (i.e., extra folds of skin), small jaws, and high arched palates.
Term
Klinefelter syndrome
Definition
males inherit one or more extra X chromosomes--their genotype is XXY or more rarely XXXY or XY/XXY mosaic. In severe cases, they have relatively high-pitched voices, asexual to feminine body contours as well as breast enlargement, and comparatively little facial and body hair. They are sterile or nearly so, and their testes and prostate gland are small
Term
Cytoplasmic inheritance
Definition
Inheritance of characteristics coded for by genes found in the cytoplasm. Because the cytoplasm is usually contributed entirely by one parent, the characteristics encoded by these genes are usually inherited from only that parent.
Term
How are mitochondrial genes inherited?
Definition
From the mother and thats it.
