General Adaptation Syndrome GAS
Definition
Alarm reaction – Body functions are heightened to respond to stressors (elevated blood pressure and heart rate, heightened mental alertness, increased secretion of epinephrine and norepinephrine).
◯◯ Resistance stage – Body functions normalize while responding to the stressor. The body attempts to cope with the stressor.
◯◯ Exhaustion stage – Body functions are no longer able to maintain a response to the stressor.

Definition
Stage 1: NREM: few minutes, light, vital signs/metabolism diminish, awakened easily
Stage 2 NREM: deeper, 10-20m, VS/M continue to diminish, slightly more stimulation to awaken, increased relaxation
Stage 3 NREM: Deep, 15-30m, VS decrease, difficult to awaken, seldom moves
Stage 4 NREM: delta sleep: deepest sleep 15-30m, very low VS, physical rest and restoration, talking/sleep walking occurs, repair and renewal of tissue
REM: Dreams, about 90m after falling asleep, increases with each cycle-about 20m, varying VS, mental rest and restoration occurs

Insomnia: women and older adults more: inability to get an adequate amount of sleep and to feel rested

Sleep apnea: more than 3 apneic occurences at least 10s/hr result in decreased arterial o2 sat levels due to 1 or more. Central nervous system dysfunction doesnt trigger breathing or obstruction in upper airway
